The Church played important role in the past. One of the chapels (the
Firlej Chapel) brings to mind the Chapel of king Zygmunt in the Cracow
Wawel. According to the chronicles, after the historic act of union was
signed, the king and his advisers expressed their deep gratitude by
singing religious hymn "Te Deum". The historic Cross that witnessed the
great event is stored in the Dominican Monastery collection of museum
pieces. The painting entitled "The Gread Fire of Lublin in 1719",
exhibited inside the Tyszkiewicz family Chapel, shows the 18th century
Lublin. Its history is connected with the relics of the Holy Cross Wood
brought here from Kiev. The Holy Cross Wood was transported to Lublin by
the Kiev Bishop - Andrzej. The relics have protested Lublin and its
inhabitants for many centuries. There are many stories of the miraculous
cures and saving the city against the elements of nature. These stories
are depicted on the pictures by great masters in the church's naves.
The beautiful and precious reliquary that weighs 18 kilos was stolen
from the Basilica in 1991 but none of the inhabitants of Lublin has any
doubts that - sooner or later - the Holy Cross Wood will return to its
righteous place.
