563. The Jade Mountain

Yushan (Chinese: 玉山; pinyin: Yùshān; literally "Jade Mountain"), also Mount Yu is the highest mountain in Taiwan and the fourth highest mountain on an island. In the past, Yushan was known among English-speaking expats and missionaries as Mount Morrison, thought to have been named in honor of the 19th century missionary Robert Morrison. Today, the mountain is referred to as Yushan or Jade Mountain. The highest point of Yushan range, Yushan, is 3,952 metres above sea level. Yushan was once in the ocean and raised to the current height because the Eurasian Plate slid under the neighboring Philippine Sea Plate.  The ocean waters off Taiwan's east coast are deep; in fact, submarine slopes plunge down to the Pacific Ocean at a grade of 1:10 and the ocean reaches a depth of more than 4,000 metres about 50 kilometres from the coast

559. Fagaras

The name is alleged to derive from the Romanian word for "beech" (fag). Another source of the name is alleged to derive from the Hungarian language word for "partridge" (fogor). A more plausible explanation is that the name is given by Fogaras river coming from the Pecheneg "Fagar šu", which means ash water. Another source of the name is given by folk etymology to be Hungarian, as the rendering of "wood" (fa) and "money" (garas), with legends stating that money made of wood had been used to pay the peasants who built the fortress around 1310.

549. Hedgehog

The southern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor), sometimes referred to as east European hedgehog, white-bellied hedgehog or white-chested hedgehog, is very similar in lifestyle and appearance to the European hedgehog, but the former has a white spot on its chest. For a long time these two species were considered to be one. The northern white-breasted hedgehog was formerly recognized as a subspecies of the Southern white-breasted hedgehog but newer investigations see both as different species. The Southern white-breasted hedgehog and European hedgehog can hybridize. Unlike its European counterpart, the Southern white-breasted hedgehog never digs dens. It prefers building grass nests in secluded places.
